The Internet offers a wealth of data on all topics, but chemical information provides unique challenges for searching. General-purpose indexing techniques are summarized, with a discussion of why those techniques are unsuited for use with chemical data. The ChemFinder WebServer, a WWW-based chemical index, addresses some of the weaknesses in nonchemical search engines.
