The 2020 Design Research Seminar was organized by the Design Research and Innovation Group of the University of La Laguna, in collaboration with the Aula Cultural de Diseño of the academic institution. Under the title «Research on, for, of, by design» the question of the different ways of approaching design from disciplinary rigor in scientific research was addressed. The conference program established a space in which to debate and socialize the advances in postgraduate research and doctoral theses in design carried out in the Canary Islands. This edition, due to the pandemic caused by covid-19, its celebration was in virtual format. On this occasion, the professor in design management, Manuel Lecuona spoke on the subject of the seminar mapping those issues that characterize the current context of design research in the university environment and offered feedback to each of the doctoral communications made by Canarian researchers. His analysis and reflections, set out below, constitute useful and relevant information on the state of research in academic institutions that contribute to clarify some of the questions raised
