From colonisation to globalisation: The impact of English on Greek, with particular reference to the dialect of Cyprus

This paper focuses on a particularly interesting case, seeking, first, to trace the beginnings of the influence of English on the Greek dialect spoken in Cyprus and, second, to account for its continuous increase in contemporary history up to the present. The narrative is built upon a number of comparisons regarding the position of English, both synchronic and diachronic: from colonialism in Cyprus and other parts of the world, to the strive for independence, and on to the role the island pays in current global affairs
