STUDY ON CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND CAUSES OF ACUTE CONJUNCTIVITIS IN CHILDREN UNDER 6 YEARS AT THANH HOA HOSPITAL OF PEDIATRICS

Objectives: To comment on the clinical characteristics of acute conjunctivitis in children and study some causes of acute conjunctivitis. Materials and methods: A clinical descriptive study without control group was carried out in 238 patients  ≤ 6 years of age with acute conjunctivitis and tested hormonal conjunctiva microbiology for treatment in Ophthalmology Department of the Thanh Hoa Hospital of Pediatrics from January to July 2016. Results: The highest infected age was found in the group of 19 months to ≤ 72 months, male 63.87%, female 36.13%. Both eyes infected with conjunctivitis accounted for 77.31%. 59.24% of patients came to the examination after conjunctivitis 3-7 days and 31.94% after 7 days. 100% showed redness and rheum, 91.71% had swollen eyelashes, 92.18% had pseudomembranous. 75.63% of the cases were severe. Results of staining swab samples were 68.49% with bacteria, 35.29% were Gram (+) bacteria, 32.2% were Gram (-), 30.67% were isolated with bacteria. 65.55% of PCR tests were positive for adenovirus, 21.85% of patients had positive bacteria and PCR. Conclusion: 100% of cases with acute conjunctivitis in children ≤ 6 years old had red eyes and swab. The disease usually starts in one eye first, and infects to the second eye after averages 3 days. Severe and moderate clinical level was common. 11.37% had corneal complications.
