The linkage between research areas and industries has brought many benefits to the socio-economic development of a country. In Vietnam, although the mechanism of autonomy in science and technology (S &T) has been established, this linkage is not strong enough. There are many objective and subjective reasons that hinder the formation and development of linkages between research areas and industries. Based on the survey of 4 universities and 4 institutes in the North of Vietnam, the article analyzes the negative factors which affect to the linkage, thus suggesting some solutions for that.
Accordingly, industries play a central role, as investors as well as consumers of S & T products; S & T activities of the universities, institutes apart from the objective of strengthening their self-capacity will mainly serve the needs of industries; The Government plays a supporting role, ensuring the linkage by legal system and also involved in the linkage through public-private partnership process.
