Trends in the numbers of asylum applicantsin Britain 1997-00 are examined,together with changes in the law and inthe treatment of refugees in the U.K. Thesystem is designed to deter claimants,penalise anyone assisting illegal entryand aims to expedite removal. Newregulations control the location of asylumseekers in the country, pending determination of their status. Differentialtreatment of various nationalities indicatessystemic discrimination against certaingroups.
