Cultural differences may pose as manychallenges as linguistic difficulties forrefugee children and their families in theschool setting. This article explores thecontributions of the Multicultural LiaisonProgram (MLD) created by theOttawa Board of Education and theOttawa-Carleton Immigration ServicesOrganization (OCISO). Through culturalmediation, the MLO Programbuilds partnerships that support theefforts of schools and the refugeecommunities they serve. Anchored in asystemic approach that considers thechild, parents, the ethnoculturalcommunity, teachers, and school officials,the MLOs - or cultural-interpreters -facilitate the learning and teachingprocesses.
