Unauthorized landfills are one of the most important problems in the world. The substances released from the waste pollute both the atmosphere and the soil, and subsequently the ground water, causing huge damage to the environment. In the article, the authors present a brief overview of the problems of waste management in the Russian Federation, especially the problem of unauthorized landfills in St. Petersburg.
