The article considers the problems of patriotic upbringing of the learners by means of using historical novels in the teaching process of history. The methodology concerns both curricular and extracurricular reading. The author tries to prove the necessity of including historical novels in high school syllabus in order to develop individuals’ value system. The usage of historical novels will help the students to imagine the spirit of the era facilitating further perception of the teaching material.
