"This article is based on a Ionesco’stestimony during a conference he deliverednear Florence in 1986. Rhinocéros is a fable,an allegory which historically refers to thesubversive power of the Iron Guard, whoseultranationalist and xenophobic languageconverted most of Eugen Ionescu’s friends toNazism, gradually turning them into rhinos. Therhinos speak a foreign and incomprehensiblelanguage, full of violent slogans where humanvalues are completely degraded. Everythingbecomes threatening. Totalitarian ideology andcollectivism propagate barbarism. The risk is thedefinitive destruction of thought."
