This research was conducted to study the use of magnesium (Mg) as a sacrificial anode to protect Zn which is used as anode in electrochemical cells to generate electrical energy from seawater. Cu coated with Ag metal is used as a cathode to protect it from cathodic corrosion. The electrochemical cell consists of 20 cells arranged in a series, and each cell is filled with 300 mL of water. The electrochemical cell was connected to a 3 watt 12 volt LED load for 72 hours and data collection of electrical characteristics including voltage, current, and light intensity, every 1 hour. From the voltage and current data, the amount of resistance is calculated. The results showed that the use of Mg as a sacrificial anode resulted in greater electrical characteristics data compared to electrochemical cells without the use of sacrificial anodes.
