The article presents the development and field tests of the autonomous remote-controlled midget floating craft (ARMFC) "Vodomerka" of the SSC RAS. This is a prototype of a promising surface research platform for hard-to-reach areas of irrigation canals and small water basins. At the present configuration, the ARMFC is controlled remotely by an operator via video communication. The platform hosts equipment for panoramic video recording of surroundings and measurement of the environment. Examples of applications of ARMFC in the exploration of the relief and the coastline conditions, the degree of plant overgrowth across the water canal, and even ornithological monitoring are presented. The use of a conductometric sensor makes it possible to study the electrical conductivity of water along small waterways revealing contributing sources. Thanks to the modular architecture, the platform allows one to perform multiple tasks in the agro-industrial complex. It also serves as an educational tool for field research, both for agroecology students and designers of irrigation networks.
