Mental disease in elite athletes is common, affecting their sports performance, as well as other parts of their life. Sports psychiatry is a medical subspecialty dedicated to the study of psychiatry in this specific population. The aim of this paper is to summarize the most common mental diseases in athletes, as well as their similarities and differences with the general population. The role of the sports psychiatrist within a multidisciplinary team that addresses mental health and illness in athletes will also be discussed.
