The results of an investigation of production and destruction processes in the plankton community of the lower Don in May 2018 and July, September and October 2019 are presented. The quantitative indicators of primary production and destruction at various stations in this area are presented. A high intensity of production and destruction processes at the lower Don stations was shown in comparison with the station located above the Tsimlyansk reservoir, in May 2018. The absence of a strict relationship between the exposure horizon and the intensity of production and destruction processes was noted. The dominance of production processes over destruction processes was revealed in July 2019. It was shown that from the three investigated seasons, the most favorable period for the accumulation of organic matter was July 2019, despite of the relative low water content. A comparison of the data obtained at the same points in May 2018, during the flood period and in September 2019 was carried out, and it was noted that in the high-water season, the intensity of production and destruction processes was higher. Thus, it is shown that in this area, during the study period, increased water content had a favorable effect on production activity, but it was not a determining factor.
