ON THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE NART BATRAZ’S NAME

На широком историко-языковом материале рассматриваетсявопрос этимологии имени «Батраз» (Batraz, Batyraz), знаменитого героя осе-тинской нартиады, но также популярного среди современных осетин.Авторразделяет мнение исследователей, связавших происхождение имени Батраз слексемой batyr, однако, отвергая тюрко-монгольский характер и самой лексе-мы, и рассматриваемого антропонима, выдвигает гипотезу о том, что раз-нообразные формы слова batyr восходят к древне-иранской лексеме patar `за-щитник, охранник, хранитель`, которая в алтайские языки могла быть усвоенав скифо-сарматскую эпоху (I тыс. до н. э. – первые века I тыс. н. э.). The issue of the etymology of the anthroponym Batraz (Batraz, Batyraz - a well-knowncharacter of the Ossetian Nartiada, equally popular among modern Ossetians) is considered inthe extensive historical and linguistic material. Sharing the opinion of certain researchers whorelated the origin of the name Batraz with the lexeme “batyr”, the author, however, rejects theTurk-Mongol nature of either lexical item or the anthroponym. The following hypothesis is madethat various forms of the word batyr come from the Old Iranian patar ‘defender’, ‘protector’,‘watcher’, which might have been assimilated by the Altaic languages during the Scytho-Sarmatian times (I millennia BC – fi rst centuries AD).
