There exists a gap between the state of the art in this part of reliability theory devoted to preventive replacement and its applications to real world situations. This dichotomy results in part from the fact that standard models are too simple from the point of view of the cost structure to adequately deal with reality. In considering a general cost structure for the block replacement model with inactivity periods, we hope to contribute to filling this gap.
