. Names are used for vegetation in different kinds of ways, such as to show the type of vegetation or its physiognomy. Vegetation types are defined by criteria which may be expressed in their name. If a vegetation type has several different physiognomies, the name may refer to that vegetation and to only one of its physiognomies. Some names used in more than one way can cause confusion, such as savanna, woodland, forest, and terms in other languages. Several examples are given for each kind of application of names.
