After an experiment on the effect of different lubricating oils on the fuel consumption of motor buses, Mr Davies and Mr Sears were confronted with results that did not conform to any tidy text‐book pattern. This article describes how orthodox methods of analysis were adapted and used to lead to useful conclusions.
