A measure of the social class of towns that is useful to businessmen and economists is the percentage of households in which the chief wage‐earner has a basic wage exceeding £ 7 10s. a week. Data are not available for determining this directly, but this article shows how the measure may be estimated from available data and gives a table of values for 140 large towns.
