Many an experimenter has tried to use the method of least squares to estimate the true straight‐line relationship between x and y when he has a few observed values subject to error, and has been exasperated to learn that the method gives two lines. Mr. Jessop surveys recent theoretical work that has been done on the problem and shows how a single line may be determined. He also discusses in what practical situations it is appropriate to use the one‐ and two‐line relationships.
