In a study of the variability of the results of blood‐clotting tests, interest centred on the coefficient of residual variation about regression on time. The coefficient was found to vary from one occasion to another; Dr Armitage and Dr Ingram here show how this variation was analysed with respect to some potentially relevant factors. They also describe the development of rapid significance tests for differences between means.
