SUMMARY This paper uses data from the Scottish Young People's Cohort Study to investigate the factors affecting participation in post‐compulsory education in Scotland. These surveys are a unique source of information on routes through school and on entry to higher education. The major aim of the paper is to estimate the effects of the structure of post‐compulsory schooling and certification on participation rates. The main statistical technique is multilevel logistic regression. Another aim is the investigation of regional differences in participation in Scotland.
