SUMMARY New varieties have made a major contribution to increases in world crop production over the last 25 years. The paper reviews the role played by statistics in the breeding of new varieties, including early developments in statistical genetics, the design of selection systems and the field assessment of genetic lines. The statistical contribution to national variety testing schemes is examined with particular reference to developments in the UK. The paper concludes by suggesting areas in which statistics may be involved in future variety developments.
