Summary Probability and statistics find application across the whole range of the sciences and humanities. Their use in the field of religion is not new but has received a fresh impetus from the significant role played by chance in modern physics and biology. Added to this is the increasing use of probability and statistical methods by philosophers, historians and biblical scholars. This paper traces the statistical thread which connects a varied set of issues all concerning the origin, nature and purpose of the world we live in.
