SUMMARY Indices are defined for comparing the performance of decontaminants used for culturing a micro‐organism. The data available come from two independent and different types of experiments. One experiment generates survival dose‐response data for the micro‐organism of interest in the absence of contaminating organisms. The other experiment generates binary data (contamination or no contamination) in the absence of the micro‐organism of interest. The problem is to combine these two data sets to assess the performance of decontaminants. Data from a trial experiment on Mycobacterium bovis subjected to the decontaminants oxalic acid and 1‐hexadecylpyridium chloride are used to illustrate the approach.
