SUMMARY Methods for assessing a new measurement technique are examined. The structural equations model is used to estimate the linear relationship between new and standard methods. The delta method is used to find the variance of the estimated parameters. A comparison with regression analysis is made. This is illustrated by a study on a new method of measuring cardiac output with data drawn from published reports. The estimates from the different reports are combined to give an overall estimate of the relationship between the new and standard methods.
