SUMMARY Some concepts of renewal theory are applied to survey research with special reference to retrospective questions. Procedures are described to estimate the process parameters from reported event history data. This is done for where the renewal model holds not only on the collective level, but also when the behaviour of different individuals satisfies different renewal models. The models are used not only to calculate several statistics of interest, but also to correct for memory effects.
