SUMMARY A precise description of controlled selection, a sample design introduced by Goodman and Kish (1950) is presented. Using data available from a survey of Scottish schools, a comparison of the efficiency of the method is made with multiple proportionate stratified random sampling, and controlled selection is found to perform favourably.
