Summary Evolutionary Operation (EVOP) was proposed by Box (1957) and Box and Draper (1969) as an optimizing technique for routine use in industrial processes. to overcome the shortcomings, real or imaginary, of EVOP various modifications were proposed of which Simplex EVOP (Spendley et al. , 1962) is the only one, as far as is known, to have been used to any extent. Rotating Square and Random Evolutionary Operation techniques (Lowe, 1964) seem not to have been used and the author is not aware of any other applications of these two techniques. In this paper some applications of BOX–EVOP and Simplex EVOP to chemical manufacturing processes are considered and some suggestions are made why evolutionary operation is not widely used.
