S ummary A model for the occurrence of oilfields within an oil‐bearing area has been developed, based on the excursions of a two‐dimensional stationary stochastic process above a given level. Analysis of this model leads to predictions about the number and sizes of oilfields within the area of interest. The results have been applied to some North Sea data.
