Summary Several methods have been devised to deal with the problem of constructing quarterly data (a) either when related series are available or (b) when only annual totals exist. Methods (a) lead to quarterly figures inconsistent with annual totals. Method (b) adds nothing to the economic interpretation of the quarterly phenomenon. Very little has been done to construct quarterly data using related series such that consistency with annual figures is ensured. This note tries to improve and clarify the interpretation of the only existing method we know of.
