Summary Discriminant function analysis is applied to astronomical data. The conventional morphological classification of 273 galaxies into ten groups is used to obtain discriminant functions based on seven physical characteristics. These functions are used to determine how well the physical characteristics could serve as a predictor of morphological type. The results suggest certain shortcomings of the morphological classification scheme.
