Summary An early stage in the construction of fractions of two‐level factorial experiments is the choice of defining contrasts. Standard texts give no guidance as to their selection with regard to the experimental objectives other than by trial and error. A systematic procedure, which is being used in an automatic experimental design program, is presented in this paper.
