Summary A stochastic point process model is proposed to describe the occurrence of major freezes in Lake Constance. Using existing methodology it is shown that a non‐stationary Poisson process with exponential polynomial rate function of degree two provides a reasonable fit to data on 38 major freezes in Lake Constance over the period a.d. 875 to a.d. 1974.
