Summary An investigation is made concerning the use of partial sums of Fourier series (F.S.) and spherical harmonics (S.H.) as regression models in important practical situations where the use of polynomials is subject to criticism. Procedures are developed for estimating the locations of stationary points of second‐order F.S. and S.H. models and confidence regions based on the use of certain optimal designs are given for the true locations of these points. A numerical example is included.
