Summary During the course of a winter season, a small‐bore rifleman may fire several hundred shots under competition conditions. For a competitor with a given average score, a calculation model based on the central circular bivariate normal distribution has been used to calculate the expected distribution of the displacements of shots from the point of aim, and hence the expected variation in the competitor's scores over a number of targets. Comparison with actual results obtained from competition targets showed that the calculation model was only partially successful. It was found that the model adequately represented the relationship between average score and average displacement of shots, but the variation in scores for a given competitor was larger than predicted. This discrepancy is attributed to variations in physical conditions and psychological attitude from one occasion to another. An empirical correlation of the variation in scores has therefore been developed in connection with the derivation of a handicap system. Some further applications of the analysis are considered, including the comparison of scores obtained on targets with different scoring‐ring dimensions.
