Summary Four common methods of analysing percentage (attribute) data were compared for the case of a 3 × 3 analysis without replication. Data with no interaction, linear‐ × ‐linear, linear‐ × ‐quadratic and quadratic‐ × ‐quadratic interactions were sequentially generated and the effects of interaction, and form of interaction, on the power of the F ‐test, χ 2 and Friedman's non‐parametric procedure were determined. Three‐way χ 2 and Tukey's test for non‐additivity were compared for their power for finding interactions of various forms. In all cases the χ 2 test proved superior.
