Over 70 species of fungi were found in litter by direct observation and cultural methods including washing and surface sterilization. Thirteen were found only in pine litter, 10 in hardwood, and 49 in both litters. Basidiomycete mycelia were also found in certain layers, but no species identification was attempted. Thirteen species plus the unidentified Basidiomycetes were considered important in the fungal succession. Of the important species, Deuteromycetes predominated and Ascomycetes were second in importance on both living foliage and in the L layer. Deuteromycetes, Phycomycetes, Ascomycetes, and Basidiomycetes were all prominent on F litter. Basidiomycetes seemed to be dominant in the H layer.
