For any material liberated from a watershed and deposited by air onto a lake, there is likely to be a relationship between distance from shore and quantity of particle deposition. A new method of estimating total particle deposition onto a lake surface was developed. The method is based on the distance vs. quantity relationship, and uses planimetry to integrate lake surface areas at various distances from shore. The method was applied to Tsuga canadensis and Pinus spp. pollen deposition onto a small lake on the Candian Shield. General agreement was found to exist between total pollen deposition values derived by this new method and values determined by more common methods not involving the relationship between particle deposition and distance from shore.
