Azotobacter insignis Derx has been isolated from flowing fresh water streams in Vermont and appears most frequently associated with submerged aquatic plants. This is the first report of this strictly aquatic species of aerobic nitrogen—fixing bacteria in North America. Added to the isolations in Java, Denmark, and Scotland it suggests a wide distribution.
