Water—table depths and vegetation were measured on 11 lowland areas near the Oregon cost. The density and petiole length of yellow skunk—cabbage (Lysichitum americanum Hult & St. John) were correlated with average winter water—table depths wherever winter water tables were below the soil surface (r = —0.90). Slough sedge (Carex obnupta Bail.) grew with the skunk—cabbage wherever average winter water tables were above the soil surface.
