Andrewartha and Birch's model for the effects of sparse populations in the sheep tick was reinvestigated and the results extended. Simple analytical solutions were found for the case in which ticks are distributed randomly. Clumped distributions of ticks were found to lower the probability of a female finding a mate unless the average number of ticks per sheep was less than unity.
