A cumulative catch method is used to estimate population size before experimental fishing in an area of toadfish abundance. Toadfish remained abundant in nearby shore areas though they decreased markedly in successive fishing periods in the experimental site. Reduction of the toadfish stock in the experimental area is believed due to fishing pressure rather than to an offshore movement of the fish.
