A field—portable sonic digitizer has been developed for use in conducting rapid censuses of large numbers of small plants through time. The x, y coordinates of all plants (to the nearest 1 mm) within a 6.5 x 6.5 dm quadrant can be rapidly recorded onto a paper tape. Additional information for each plant may be recorded simultaneously onto the paper tape with a numeric keyboard. The unit also may be used to measure plant canopy coverage and map soil surface features.
