Studies on correlations between soil moisture and two species of Microtus in central Illinois show that M. pennsylvanicus is associated with wet habitat, whereas M. ochrogaster is found in dry habitat (P < .005). The data support Findley's (1954) hypothesis that competitive exclusion maintains vole separation in sympatric situations.
