The necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the coexistence of n species between which competition is defined by the Lotka—Volterra equations. For two species competition, these conditions reduce to the conditions obtained by the graphical method. For n > 2, they involve not only the carrying capacities and the coefficients of competition of the n species but also the intrinsic rates of growth. The conditions for coexistence of three species are developed in some detail.
