Preliminary studies suggest that flower initiation in plants from Iowa and Texas populations of Froelichia floridana (Nutt.) Moq. is promoted by short—day photoperiods and retarded by long—day photoperiods. However, the degree of long—day retardation is less for northern plants than for southern plants. These differences are probably adaptive and seem to relate most directly to flowering before (southern plants) or after (northern plants) the summer solstice.
