Two—meter trees were placed in plastic containers so that four large roots could be extended through side holes into openings at the base of smaller pots. The effects of one species on another could be adequately measured by a precise determination of roots produced by the species in the smaller pots at the conclusion of the experiment. Many combinations of tree species or tree and herbaceous species are feasible.
