Talinum calcaricum Ware is a succulent perennial herb endemic to the cedar glades of middle Tennessee and northern Alabama. Its seeds which germinate in the spring, require moist cold treatment, light, and alternating temperatures for good germination. At constant temperatures some germination occurs at 25°C, but not at 20° or 30°C. Laboratory dry storage does not eliminate requirements for cold storage and light, but does increase germination reached after cold treatment. Germination requirements of T. calcaricum are advantageous in its cedar glade habitat. Seeds of T. mengesii Wolf, a species of sandstone and other outcrops of the southeastern United States, also require cold treatment and light, but not alternating temperatures, for good germination.
