In stable communities a major fraction of species are longevous; perennial plants in terrestrial, and largely benthic invertebrates in marine situations. The question is raised whether the relationship is fortuitous or depends on positive feedback. Available evidence often seems insufficient to rule out a third alternative, that it is tautological.
